Hi Grant, almost all treks end at Aguas Calientes, the town below Machu Picchu, where trekkers get a train back to Ollantaytambo/Cusco. There are companies that offer the Inca Trail and Salkantay combo, see here: https://www.machupicchutrek.net/salkantay-inca-trail/

This is a great infor ative article thankyou alison. My wife and i are thinking of coming over in october for a trek - we are both experienced hikers so heights or distances arent an issue (ive just got nack from a kilimanjaro trek which was fine) we will choose a mod range salkeney trek along the lines of what you suggest. My question seems obvious one to me but doesnt seem to be an option for all the treks i can see which all sem to be condensed into small timelines - can we trek one way up.on the classic inca trail, have time and machupichu, then trek down on the salkeney? Any company offer this? We are far more attracted to a slower round trip journey than a point a to b, tick a box type trip that i get the impression of from trips available. Any thoughts would be appreciated please. Thanks grant

Hi Andy, Yes, all tour companies offer the full trekking experience with transfers, guides, food, tents, permits and transport. In general it's best to book in advance instead of booking on arrival in Cusco as there's a risk entry tickets to Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu are sold out for our dates.

Thanks for your quick reply. Two more questions...

Assuming there are still available Machu Picchu entry tickets for my ending date (not sold out), will the local trekking agency usually book or assist to book the entry ticket for the Machu Picchu and add it to the cost of the trek package ?

I guess the other option might be to buy remotely in advance the entry ticket for the Machu Picchu and the Huayna Picchu, and find later in Cusco a local trekking agency that can sell me a Salkantay trekking package with an ending date that match the date of my Machu Picchu entry ticket ?

Thanks

Hi Andy, it's possible to book last minute in Cusco but there's a risk that Machu Picchu tickets or Huayna Picchu access is sold out already. Agencies generally don't pre-purchase tickets. It's better to book in advance if you can.

Hi
I plan to book the Salkantay Trek with a small local agency once I will arrive in Cusco, so only few days before the trek departure (around the third week of April, 2025). Since I read on many sources that we need to book weeks in advance the entry tickets for the Machu Picchu (and Huayna Picchu), the ending point of the Salkantay Trek, do the small local trek agencies buy months in advance a bunch of entry tickets for the Machu Picchu for different dates to be sure they have them available for the trekkers of Salkantay Trek ?
Thanks for your reply.

Hi Erica, that sounds terrible. If you haven't booked I recommend using the booking platform, Skyhook, who work with the best local operators and are much more responsive: https://www.skyhookadventure.com/

I am trying to get in touch with Machu Pichhu Reservations...I have sent them 4 emails the last 7 days (last ones asking them to PLEASE answer me), I've tried writing them via their webform on the site, and I have tried messaging them on WhatsApp. Silent. Anyone had this problem with them as well?

Hi Ben, if you're not too phased about heights and some exposure then I do recommend the hike up Huayna Picchu. It provides the classic birds eye view of Machu Picchu, and is a fun and exhilarating hike. I haven't hiked Machu Picchu mountain personally, but it is a slightly longer and more gradual hike that is best done if you plan to spend two days at Machu Picchu.

Just wondering if either the Wayna Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu Mountain are musts for the extra $60 fee. Is the Machu option the classic view of the Machu Picchu site? We are thinking of going Oct 2nd, and reserving with Machu Picchu Reservations by train:).
Great blog, and thanks for the tips!
