Hello Mark,
My husband and I are planning to trek Machu Picchu early next year 2027. We are training ourselves this year to get ready for it. I am looking to book with trekking guide, if you have recommendations, please let me know. 4-5 nights trekking is good. It will be our first time travelling to Peru, so we want to explore the towns nearby and all as well. What is the best month to go, less traffic, cooler days :-). Any tips you could share with us would be awesome. Thank you for your blog, I enjoyed reading it. I look forward to hearing more about Peru and Machu Picchu!

Thanks for the useful info Mark! I am tight on time as I'm with a tour group, and breaking away for 1 day to do Rainbow Mts. I will fly into Cusco and drive to Sacred Valley to spend 2N there. Then 1N in Machu Picchu, before driving back to Cusco. Estimated arrival in Cusco 5pm, and having just 1/2 night sleep before 3AM pick-up to Rainbow Mountains. Is this sufficient acclimatizing, given I have 2N in Sacred Valley but just 1/2N in Cusco before the 3AM pick up? I have no other choice as I need to rejoin my tour group and depart Cusco the day after. It's my one shot at seeing Rainbow Mt.

Appreciate your thoughts. I'm excited at the prospect of seeing Rainbow Mt but am concerned about not acclimating sufficiently. Thanks!

Thanks for this awesome guide! I'm with a group tour flying into Lima, staying 2N in Sacred Valley. 1N in Machu Picchu. I'm tight on schedule as this is a group tour. I plan to break from the group for 1 day to do Rainbow Mts. So after 2N in Sacred Valley and 1N in Machu Picchu on 1Sept, we drive into Cusco on 2 Sept arriving around 5PM. I plan to rest & sleep 8PM-2.30AM. Would a 3AM pickup next morning 3 Sept be too ambitious to do Rainbow due to insufficient acclimatizing? I don't have any other window of time to do it as I have to rejoin the group after. Would the 2N in Sacred Valley & 1N Machu Picchu and 1/2N in Cusco count for anything at all?

30,31 Aug: Two overnight stays in Sacred Valley
1 Sept: One overnight stay in Machu Picchu
2 Sept: Drive/Arrive Cusco 5pm. Half Overnight stay in Cusco. Sleep 8PM-2.30AM
3 Sept: 3.00AM Early morning pickup for Rainbow Mt (Back 2PM hopefully short visit to Sacsayhuaman after)

Is this crazy? Or doable? I've only climbed up to 2285m previously (Mt Sinai). No altitude sickness then. But this is more than double that! So I am honestly worried and unsure if my 2N+1N in SV & MP counts for anything towards acclimatization?

Appreciate your insights. Thanks in advance

Hi,

Thanks for your very detailed explanation. Truly greatful.

Small question: What permit do you buy to be able to hike Huayana Pichu? I don't see it listed as option in any of the permits available?

Hey, we are interested in a paragliding tour in Pisac on Wednesday. We are two people and we will already be in Pisac. So there‘s no need to be picked up in Cusco. We would like to do the Paragliding in the morning and then return to Cusco in the afternoon if it‘s possible. We read that there‘s a 45 minute flight option all the way to Cusco. Is that one available for Wednesday? Thank you.

Glad you found this helpful! You could potentially camp or stay over at the village of Wayramachay after the Salkantay Pass on Day 2, that would make the day a bit shorter. I also found Day 4 to be very long, with kids I'd suggest booking a train ticket from Hydroelectrica to Aguas Calientes so you don't have to walk that section.

Hi Caitlin, I'd recommend circuit 2 for the best overall experience. It covers all major highlights, including the Guardhouse (classic postcard view), Main Plaza, Sacred Rock, Temple of the Sun, and Intihuatana (Sun Stone), and is ideal for first-timers who want the full Machu Picchu experience.
